Top 10 Best New Weapons added in Destiny 2: Shadowkeep

By Samuel Riedeman

With the release of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and the beginning of the Season of the Undying, a ton of new weapons have been added to the game. New activities will allow you to construct weapons out of Nightmare Essence on the Moon, gather gear by defeating a Vex invasion, and collect exciting new Exotics from quests and enemy drops. Some weapons you will be able to obtain with ease, others will be a grind. We’ve compiled a list of the best weapons for you to get your hands on and instructions on how to get them.

10. Optative Hand Cannon

What makes it good:

This hand cannon for your energy slot feels similar to some of the most popular Legendary hand cannons like Trust, Service Revolver, and IKELOS-HC-v1.0.1. This is because all of these weapons have a low recoil and fire 180 rounds per minute (RPM), the highest class for hand cannons. The Optative also has access to some great random perks like Outlaw, Kill Clip, and Rapid Hit. This hand cannon is great for PvP since its recoil and RPM keep your aim accurate.

How to get it:

Visit Ikora Rey in the Tower to pick up the Legendary Quest, “Data Seed: Hand Cannon”. You will be tasked with defeating 50 Vex anywhere in the system with hand cannons. Once you complete that step, you can collect your new hand cannon by breaching the Black Garden in the Vex Offensive activity and defeating the final boss.

9. Subjunctive Submachine Gun

What makes it good:

Recluse has been the submachine gun dominating PvP for a while now, but Subjunctive has the potential to challenge the throne. With the same 900 RPM and magazine as Recluse, the new energy submachine gun, Subjunctive, also has very similar stats in Handling and Stability. Perks like Outlaw and MultiKill Clip bring this submachine gun on par with Recluse and compete with its unique perks. While Recluse will reign supreme for most people, Subjunctive is definitely a good replacement that is very easy to acquire in comparison.

How to get it:

To obtain this weapon, simply acquire the Legendary Quest “Data Seed: Submachine Gun” from Ikora Rey in the Tower. To complete the quest, Defeat 50 Vex with submachine guns anywhere in the system then complete the Vex Offensive activity and defeat the final boss to receive your new submachine gun.

8. Edgewise Machine Gun

Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

What makes it good:

Machine guns are a relatively new weapon type in Destiny 2 so there aren’t many in the game to choose from; however, Edgewise is among the best. Edgewise has an RPM of 900, the highest for machine guns. Additionally, perks like Rampage and Feeding Frenzy will increase damage per second (DPS) through the roof. Edgewise is very similar to 21% Delirium, both having the highest rate of fire, the latter having better range and stability.

How to get it:

With the introduction of the Shadowkeep expansion, Bungie said goodbye to “Pinnacle” weapons and instead introduced “Ritual” weapons; the difference between the two is that the rewarded weapon no longer has unique perks, but instead a curated roll of perks. You will acquire Edgewise by picking up the Legendary Vanguard Quest “First Impressions” from Zavala. To complete the quest you must score points by defeat enemies with Solar weapons and machine guns; in total scoring 10,000 points, 1,000 final blows with machine guns, and 1,500 Solar kills.

7. Love and Death Grenade Launcher

Top 10 Best New Weapons added in Destiny 2: Shadowkeep-Love and Death Grenade Launcher
Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

What makes it good:

This power grenade launcher out-performs many existing launchers due to its impressive stats and unique perks. The weapon fires 150 RPM, the highest possible among legendary grenade launchers. Combined with perks like Spike Grenades and Full Court, the DPS of this weapon increases exponentially. Spike Grenades increases damage on direct hits while Full Court increases detonation damage as the projectile travels further before exploding. In  other words, the further away from your target, the more damage Love and Death will do. Combining all these features does intense damage to single targets, making this weapon a great boss-killer.

How to get it:

This weapon is unlocked by completing the “Essence of Insanity” Legendary quest which may be difficult to find depending on what is in rotation. This essence has the chance of dropping randomly, but has the highest chance in the Nightmare Hunt called “Nightmare of Insanity: The Fanatic”. These rotate weekly so you might need to wait for it. However, once you obtain an Essence, you can reacquire another at any time from the Lectern of Enchantment in Sanctuary.

Once you have obtained the Essence of Insanity, you will be tasked with getting grenade launcher final blows in strikes, Gambit, or the Crucible and to claim the Bound Manacle in the Gatehouse. To find the Bound Manacle, land in the Sorrow’s Harbor and travel southwest towards the Hellmouth. Once you enter, follow the familiar path until you reach The Gatehouse and continue until you enter a circular room. Here you will find a yellow-bar Hive Knight called Ehrath’ur, Eternal Blade. Kill him and return to the Lectern to receive your loot.

6. One Small Step Shotgun

Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

What makes it good:

Shotguns tend to dominate in PvP, but One Small Step has impressive perks and stats that put it above the rest. This kinetic shotgun has an RPM of 140, the highest fire-rate among all legendary shotguns. Combined with its Rapid-Fire frame, this shotgun can fire full auto with deeper ammo reserves, giving you an extremely fast-hitting shotgun. While this is already impressive, One Small Step has another very unique perk: One-Two Punch. This is the only kinetic shotgun with this perk which increases melee damage for a short duration when hitting an enemy with every pellet in a shot. Combining your abilities in the combo shoot-melee-melee-repeat will drastically increases your DPS to the point that it is even a quick boss killer in PvE.

How to get it:

This weapon is in the same boat as Love and Death since it is received from a Nightmare Hunt essence. The “Essence of Rage” can drop randomly, but will have a higher chance of dropping in the “Nightmare of Rage” Hunt where you face Dominus Ghaul. Remember, these rotate weekly.

With the Essence of Rage in hand, you will have to claim the Fangs of Shun’Gath in the World’s Grave, and land final blows on the Moon with Supers, grenades, and melee. To get the Fangs, land in Sorrow’s Harbor and travel southwest towards the Hellmouth. Once you enter, follow the familiar path until you reach The Gatehouse and continue further until you enter a circular room. Here you will find a yellow-bar Hive Knight called Shun’Gath. Kill him and return to the Lectern in Sanctuary to receive your loot.

5. Adhortative Pulse Rifle

Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

What makes it good:

Pulse rifles are the best of both worlds when it comes to accurate, but quick damage in Destiny 2. The Adhortative pulse rifle has an RPM of 390, which is not the highest, but is the same as Bygones, the Gambit pulse rifle which is very popular in the Crucible. Where this weapon shines is in the perks. Adhortative has access to great PvP perks like Feeding Frenzy and Multikill Clip. Additionally, if you use Adhortative in PvE, look out for perks like Dragonfly or Rampage to increase damage for add-clearing.

How to get it:

To get this new energy pulse rifle, visit Ikora Rey in the Tower and pick up the Legendary Quest “Data Seed: Pulse Rifle”. To complete the quest, Defeat 50 Vex with pulse rifles anywhere in the system then complete the Vex Offensive activity and defeat the final boss to receive your Adhortative.

4. Randy’s Throwing Knife Scout Rifle

Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

What makes it good:

Scout rifles tend to get a bad rep in Destiny 2, but Randy’s Throwing Knife is worth getting. This weapon has an RPM of 260, the highest possible for scout rifles. Additionally, Randy’s Throwing Knife is the only kinetic scout rifle in that class, meaning you can pair with awesome energy slot weapons like Recluse, or others from this list. This weapon also has the biggest default scout rifle magazine in the game, 19. These traits pair perfectly with its Rapid-Fire Frame which allows firing full auto with deeper ammo reserves and a faster reload when the weapon is empty. Possible perks are Kill Clip and Rapid Hit, great for increasing DPS. Not only is this scout rifle among the fastest in the game, but it is full-auto, allowing you to shred guardians in the Crucible.

How to get it:

Randy’s Throwing Knife is also a new “Ritual” weapon, replacing “Pinnacle” weapons from past seasons. Randy’s Throwing Knife is rewarded by completing the Crucible Legendary quest “Reconnaissance by Fire”. This quest can be completed by getting 450 Scout Rifle final blows, 2100 Glory earned, and 14,000 enemies defeated and medals. This quest is definitely a grind, but multikills grant the most efficient progress.

3. Tranquility Sniper Rifle

Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

What makes it good:

Sniper rifles can put out massive damage if in the right hands, and Tranquility has access to great perks that will improve your gameplay. For the Crucible, Tranquility can roll perks like Outlaw to increase your reload time and Opening Shot to one-shot guardians easier. What takes this kinetic sniper rifle to the next level is the viability in PvE. Tranquility is the second sniper rifle (and only kinetic) to have the perk Firing Line available which increases precision damage when near two or more allies. This makes for a great boss killer when you’re in an activity with your Fireteam, like the new raid.

How to get it:

You will have to cleanse an essence in order to receive this sniper rifle. The “Essence of Vanity” Legendary quest drops from powerful enemies, so look out for yellow-bar enemies. In order to complete the quest, you must participate in activities on the Moon, defeat 25 enemies with Sniper Rifles, and collect the Horned Wreath in the Chamber of Night.

To find the Horned Wreath, travel to Sanctuary and head to the Anchor of Light. Take the path on the right to find the Temple of Crota. Continue through the temple until you reach the bottom and continue past The World’s Grave. You will soon reach the Chamber of the Night and see the quest marker. Pick up the weapon part and return to the Lectern in Sanctuary to receive your loot.

2. Sacred Provenance Pulse Rifle

Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

What makes it good:

Raids in Destiny 2 tend to drop the best gear, or at least the most sought after. This kinetic pulse rifle should be on your list to get. Sacred Provenance has a decent RPM of 450, the second highest among pulse rifles. Very similar to Blast Furnace, a popular pulse rifle from the Black Armory, Sacred Provenance has great range and excellent perks available. Outlaw and Kill Clip are great perks and are common on many pulse rifles; however, if you swap Outlaw for Rapid Hit, you have a rarer, more effective weapon. Rapid Hit allows precision hits to temporarily increase stability and reload speed while Kill Clip causes reloading after a kill to grant increased damage. Now this is where things get interesting. Rapid Hit only requires precision hits to activate its effect, while Outlaw requires kills. As an Aggressive Burst frame pulse rifle, Sacred Provenance fires four-round bursts, meaning you have the potential to get x4 reload speed with one pull of the trigger. Combined with Kill Clip, you have the ability to melt enemies in the Crucible with ease.

How to get it:

The only way you will be able to get Sacred Provenance is to play the new raid, Garden of Salvation. You can expect it to drop from bosses or chests found within the Raid. You won’t need to finish the Raid, you only need to get to one of the loot drops to have a chance of getting it.

1. Monte Carlo Exotic Auto Rifle

Destiny 2 – Credit: Bungie

Why is it the best?

This kinetic exotic has the unique ability Monte Carlo Method: Dealing damage with this weapon reduces your melee cooldown and grants a chance to fully charge your melee ability with each kill. Additionally, it has a unique perk called Markov Chain: This weapon gains increased damage from melee kills and kills with this weapon. Melee kills grant ammo for this weapon.

How does this weapon stand out from other Autos? The Monte Carlo has an RPM of 600, putting it in the second highest damage class for Auto Rifles. You will be able to have fun with melee abilities as you breeze through enemies in PvE; or, take this weapon into the Crucible with your favorite melee character to wreak havoc.

How to get it:

Unfortunately, this weapon is a random world drop. This means you have a chance of getting it from any source, like the world activities, Strikes, Public Events, Crucible matches, Gambit, Escalation Protocol, the Menagerie, the Blind Well, and the Vex Offensive. However, there are ways of increasing your chances like participating in Raids, Raid Lairs, and Nightfall Strikes. The higher the difficulty of the activity, the better quality drops you’ll get.

That’s our list of the best new weapons from the Shadowkeep launch. We kept this top ten well-rounded so you can find gear best for PvE as well as PvP. Many of these weapons you will be able to obtain easily and try to get your own god-roll. Good luck and happy hunting!
